2170w Clean Corona Wire Error Continues

The following is a procedure for cleaning the drum unit using an automatic process through the machine and a manual process using either a medical alcohol swab (available at local retail pharmacy or drugstore) or a cotton swab lightly moistened with Isopropyl alcohol.

WARNING: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and should be kept away from fire or flame.

NOTE: This cleaning process may have to be repeated several times to remove certain kinds of foreign material from the drum unit surface.  If there is a foreign material on the drum and it does not come off after several cleanings, the drum will need to be replaced.

1.  Do the following to complete the automatic cleaning process.

a.  Press the GO button one time to make sure your machine is in Ready mode.  Have a sheet of A4 or Letter size paper available.

b.  Open the front cover and the back cover (face-up output tray).

NOTE: Make sure that the two green envelope levers on the left and right hand sides are in the up position.

c.  Press the GO button five times.

d.  Close the front cover.  The machine will prepare the Drum Cleaning process.  When the machine is ready for the Drum Cleaning process, the Ready LED will turn on.

e.  Once the Ready LED turns on, open the manual feed slot cover.

f.  Using both hands, slide the manual feed paper guides to the width of the paper that you are going to use.

g.  Using both hands, put one piece of A4 or Letter size paper in the manual feed slot until the top edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller.  When you feel the machine pull in the paper, let go.  The machine will start the Drum Cleaning process.  The Ready LED flashes during the Drum Cleaning process.

NOTE:

- The machine makes a mechanical noise during the Drum Cleaning process because the machine rotates the OPC drum in reverse.  This noise is not due to a malfunction of the machine.

- DO NOT put more than one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot at any one time, as it may cause a jam.

- If the paper in the manual feed slot is other than A4 or Letter size, the machine will stop the Drum Cleaning process and eject the paper.

- Make sure that the paper is straight and in the proper position on the manual feed slot.  If it is not, it may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam.

- DO NOT close the back cover (face-up output tray) during the Drum Cleaning process.  The machine will stop the Drum Cleaning process and eject the paper.  It may cause a jam.

- If the machine receives a print job before you put the sheet of paper in the manual feed slot, the machine will finish the Drum Cleaning process first, and then print the print job.

h.  When the machine has finished cleaning, it returns to the Ready mode.

NOTE:   If you are experiencing a print quality issue, we recommend you complete STEP 1 at least three times total using a new blank sheet of paper each time.  Upon completion, please discard the used paper.  If the print quality continues after doing the automatic cleaning process three times, do the following manual cleaning process.

2.  Do the following to complete a manual cleaning of the drum.

a.  Turn off the machine's power switch.  Disconnect all the cables and then unplug the power cord from the power outlet.

b.  Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

Caution

- We recommend you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

- To prevent damage to the machine caused by static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.

Image

c.  Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the green lock lever on the left side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

Image

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

d.  Take the print sample and put it in front of the drum unit (see image below) to find the area of the drum that may be causing the issue.

Image

e.  Turn the drum unit gear toward you by hand and look for any marks or material on the drum surface (1).  Turning the drum gear will ensure you inspect the entire drum surface.

Image

f.  Clean the roller by gently wiping the entire surface of the drum with an alcohol swab, such as a medical pad or wipe, or cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol (91% strength alcohol is preferred, but 70 75% strength alcohol is also acceptable).  Allow the alcohol to evaporate or dry off the surface before continuing further.  Be sure to look over the entire drum as there may be several areas on a drum that need cleaning.

As a precaution please note: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and should be kept away from fire or flame.

Caution

-  The drum is photosensitive so DO NOT touch it with your fingers.

- DO NOT clean the surface of the photosensitive drum with a sharp object.

- DO NOT use a scrubbing motion because this might damage the drum.

Image

g.  When you are done cleaning the drum and the drum surface is dry, clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located at the top of the drum unit from left to right and back several times. Be sure to return the green tab to the home position.

Image

h.  Reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place). If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically.

Image

i.  Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine and close the front cover pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

j.  Plug the power cord back into the power outlet, then reconnect the cables and turn on the power switch.

3.  Print 10 to 15 blank pages from the computer to further clean any remaining debris left on the drum surface.

4.  If you are experiencing a print quality issue, print a document and compare it to previous prints to see if the print quality has improved.

- If the issue is the same or the quality has improved, but the issue is still visible, you will need to repeat the manual cleaning process.  Multiple cleanings has been very successful in resolving print quality issues.

- If a print quality issue continues after multiple cleanings, the drum may need to be replaced.  The part number is DR420.
